In simpler terms, LeBron James still wants to play in the Paris Olympics this summer. He also seems open to extending his time playing in the NBA for a few more years and hopes to retire as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. However, he’s not sure if these plans will work out.
During the recent All-Star Game, James played despite dealing with ongoing treatment for his injured left ankle. He didn’t play for long and gave up his spot to Stephen Curry in the second half.
“The most important thing for me right now is definitely my health,” James stated.
His health will be the most important factor in all of James’ basketball decisions from now on, whether they’re short-term or long-term. Currently, his main focus is on the playoffs, with the Lakers currently at 30-26 and ninth in the Western Conference, even though they’ve won six of their last seven games.
“We’re heading in the right way,” James remarked.
At 39, James has played more minutes than anyone else in NBA history. If he returns for a 22nd season this fall, which he plans to do, he’ll tie Vince Carter for the NBA record in that regard. However, he’s uncertain about how long he wants to keep playing.
Right now, his main priority is the Lakers and their push for the postseason. After that, he’ll decide whether to join USA Basketball this summer. As of now, playing in Paris is part of his plans.
“I promised to be part of the Olympic team this year, but whether I can do it depends on my health,” James clarified. “Right now, I feel healthy enough to play at the level I know I can.”
The Olympic decision is a bit tricky.
The Lakers’ season could end in April, May, or June. If it ends early, James will have plenty of time to rest and prepare for the U.S. training camp in July, followed by exhibition games and the Olympics ending in mid-August. But if the Lakers go far in the playoffs, James might prioritize resting and getting ready for the next NBA season over playing more basketball in the summer.
“It’s like putting more wear and tear on my body,” said James, who has competed in three Olympics and won two gold medals. “If I decide to play for Team USA, I’ll give it my best effort and represent our country with honor,” James stated.
He’s close to reaching 40,000 regular-season points, likely within five games. There aren’t many records left for him to chase as he’s already the all-time scoring leader. He wants to play in the NBA alongside his son, Bronny, who could enter the draft this spring.
“I haven’t planned how many more seasons I’ll play,” James admitted. “But I know I won’t play for many more seasons,” James acknowledged.
He hasn’t decided if he wants a retirement tour or to retire quietly like Tim Duncan. James could also become a free agent this summer, though money might not be his top priority given his wealth and investments.
“I love being a Laker,” James emphasized. “But I can’t predict how long it will last or what jersey I’ll wear next. Hopefully, it’s with the Lakers. It’s a great organization with a rich history. But change is inevitable.”
